Berkshire Taconic Awards Grants to Six Environmental Projects

GREAT BARRINGTON, MA—The Berkshire Environmental Endowment, a fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, has awarded a total of $13,400 in grants to six nonprofit groups for projects focusing on water quality or related land issues in Berkshire County.

The following nonprofit groups received grants:

Berkshire Environmental Educators: $3,300 for funds for the Berkshire Educators’ Conference and the Annual Student Network Expo, and for consulting with environmental specialists.

Hoosic River Watershed Association: $1,600 for recruiting, training and coordinating volunteer stream stewards for the South Branch Hoosic River Steward project.

Laurel Lake Preservation Association: $3,000 for divers to pull invasive Eurasian milfoil from the lake.

Housatonic Valley Association: $1,000 for education about dammed lakes, outflow and downstream flow, including reprinting the Massachusetts Buffer Manual and conducting presentations.

Center for Peace Through Culture: $2,000 for GreenAgers, a group of young people designing and executing projects related to the environment throughout Berkshire County.

Berkshire Regional Planning Committee: $2,500 for expanding an educational program on vegetated buffers.

A committee of local residents reviews applications and awards grants based on excellence of the proposed project or service, its impact on the organization or community, and the ability of the organization to carry out the project.
