Press Release: Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation Tops $2 Million in Summer Grants, Including $496,786 in Scholarships (Columbia County)

Sheffield, Mass. — The board of directors of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation today announced the recipients of the second round of grantmaking for 2016. The foundation distributed a total of $430,378 in grants to individuals and nonprofits in the four-county region it serves, $496,786 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors, and grants totaling over $1.1 million from donors with charitable funds at the foundation.

In Columbia County, the foundation awarded $223,179 from the Germantown Arts and Humanities Fund; New Lebanon Education Foundation; Simple Gifts Fund; eight scholarship funds; and a new BTCF initiative focused on healthy food access.  

Education Enrichment: The Germantown Arts and Humanities Fund will fund two programs in the Germantown Central School District: Poetry & Prose Writing Across the Curriculum and Odyssey of the Mind, which develops creative problem-solving skills. The New Lebanon Arts and Humanities Fund will fund two programs in the New Lebanon School District: Be the Book, which provides reader kits, and the student-led literary magazine at New Lebanon Junior-Senior High School.

Scholarships: Cha-Nel Scholarship Fund for graduates of Chatham and New Lebanon High Schools: Carl Aladin (Chatham), Worcester Polytechnic Institute; Megan Avenia (Chatham), SUNY Geneseo; Christine Bienes (New Lebanon), George Mason University; Shante Campbell (Chatham), Marist College; Sierra Curtsinger (East Chatham), SUNY Brockport; Shoshana Malfato (Chatham), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Shannon McDonald (New Lebanon), Undecided; Kaitlyn Menegio-Stahl (Ghent), Syracuse University; Cassandra Pearson (East Chatham), Undecided; Georgieanna Richer (Ghent), Bennington College; and Annika Tucksmith (Chatham) Connecticut College; Ferris-Burtis Music Scholarship Foundation for aspiring classical musicians: Zack Marshall of Hudson, SUNY Purchase and Julian Muller of Ghent, Cleveland Institute of Music; Closson-Raught American Legion Post 1160 Scholarship Fund for Taconic Hills High School graduates with a family member with past or present military service: Ben Gardner (Hillsdale), Albany College of Pharmacy; Sean Patrick French Scholarship Fund for graduates of Chatham High School: Ally Bartolotta (Hudson), Marist College; Katie Kraham (Ghent), Clemson University, South Carolina; and Maryanna Lansing, Princeton University; Dr. Luis A. Jacome Scholarship Fund for a graduate of Ichabod Crane High School who will study health or science: Jillian Smollar (Kinderhook), Binghamton University; Emma M. Kirchhofer Scholarship Fund for Columbia County high school seniors: Mikala Menegio-Stahl (Ghent), American University; Jeannine Triau Fund for graduates of New Lebanon High School: Jessica Caruso (New Lebanon), College of St. Rose; Quailwood Scholarship Fund for residents of Red Rock: Ryan Van Brunt, Hudson Valley Community College; Tyler Van Brunt, SUNY Cortland; Abigail Guterman, Drexel University; Ryan Nightingale, Upstate Medical University; and Nicholas Shaw, Alfred University. 

Arts and Culture: The Simple Gifts Fund awarded grants for young people to participate in theater workshops, a research-based summer trip to the island of Dominica and a trip to Bali to study Balinese dance. The Germantown Arts and Humanities Fund awarded a grant for an after-school filmmaking program.
