Press Release: Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation Tops $2 Million in Summer Grants, Including $496,786 in Scholarships (Litchfield County)

Sheffield, Mass. — The board of directors of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation today announced the recipients of the second round of grantmaking for 2016. The foundation distributed a total of $430,378 in grants to individuals and nonprofits in the four-county region it serves, $496,786 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors, and grants totaling over $1.1 million from donors with charitable funds at the foundation.

In Litchfield County, the foundation awarded $7,570 from the Arts Fund for Region One; $12,000 from the James C. Kapteyn Prize; $1,300 from the Simple Gifts Fund; and $120,000 in scholarships that will support a total of nine students.

Education and Enrichment: The James C. Kapteyn Prize, as previously announced, was awarded to William Fenton, instructor in physics and astronomy at the Hotchkiss School.

Arts and Culture: The Arts Fund for Region One awarded 31 grants to students for a range of summer enrichment experiences, including piano, saxophone and drum lessons; theater programs at Falls Village Children’s Theater, Broadway Workshop and New Hampshire Theatre Project; and camps for visual arts and jazz. The Simple Gifts Fund awarded grants to four young people for a variety of arts camps. 

Scholarships: George H. and Lucille E. Buterbaugh Scholarship Fund: Liam Grimaldi, Suffolk University; Teddy Lee Drumm Memorial Scholarship Fund: Jacob Eckstein, Champlain College; Elise Haan, St. Lawrence University; Timothy Haan, St. Lawrence University; and Clelia Tufts, Eckerd University. This year’s Margaret Derwin “Blue Sky” Scholarship as previously announced was awarded to Sara VanDeusen of North Canaan, who is currently a junior at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. Shelby Jacquier, the 2015 Derwin Scholar, will receive support for her first year at Cazenovia College.
