2016 SUMMER GRANTS AWARDED BY BERKSHIRE TACONIC 

This summer, Berkshire Taconic distributed a total of $430,378 in competitive grants to individuals and nonprofits in the four-county region it serves. View the list of grant recipients below:

 

ARTS FUND FOR REGION ONE ($7,570)

The Arts Fund for Region One provides scholarships to students of Canaan, Cornwall, Kent, North Canaan, Salisbury or Sharon who are interested in arts-related programs.

Will Conklin (Great Barrington, Mass.), to support Greenager's summer youth employment program and its environmental education project 
Ruth Dinerman (New Marlborough, Mass.), for Flying Cloud Institute's enrichment programs 
Nancy Doherty (Sheffield, Mass.), to support the therapeutic horseback riding program at Blue Rider Stables for students of Undermountain Elementary School

Elizabeth Petty (Sheffield, Mass.), to purchase ukuleles for students at Undermountain Elementary School and New Marlborough Elementary School
Michelle Raczkowksi (Sheffield, Mass.), for students enrolled in Mt. Everett's global education program to travel to Ireland, Wales, England and France
Andrew Rapport (Sheffield, Mass.), to support Mt. Everett Middle and High School's life skills class, where students engage in the community
Angela Maria Spitia (Sheffield, Mass.), to support a trip to New York City for students in the advanced placement Spanish class at Mt. Everett High School

fund for williamstown ($11,300)

The Fund for Williamstown supports innovative projects and services that benefit the residents of Williamstown. 

Community Access to the Arts (Great Barrington, Mass.), to exhibit paintings and artwork created by artists with disabilities at the Clark Art Institute's Lunder Center
Girl Scout Troop 12940 (Williamstown, Mass.), to place a "buddy bench" on the playground of Williamstown Elementary School for children who may be lonely and are looking for a friend
Elder Services of Berkshire County (Pittsfield, Mass.), for its Elder Nutrition Program that provides 9,000 meals to home-bound seniors in Williamstown
Hoosac Harvest (North Adams, Mass.), for its Subsidized Shares program that connects lower-income community members with farms, farmers and locally grown food.
IS183 Art School of the Berkshires (Stockbridge, Mass.), to hold a faculty artist exhibition in various public spaces in Williamstown to celebrate its 25th anniversary
Nutshell Playhouse (Lenox, Mass.), for its live theater performances for children and families at the Milne Library
Williamstown Historical Museum (Williamstown, Mass.), to purchase a projector, projection screen and three computers
Williamstown Youth Center (Williamstown, Mass.), to collaborate with Vermont Voltage Professional Soccer Academy to offer two weeks of soccer lessons for 20 children
Willinet (Williamstown, Mass.), to rebuild its website

GERMANTOWN STUDENT EDUCATION ARTS & HUMANITIES ENDOWMENT FUND ($6,812)

The Germantown Student Education Arts & Humanities Endowment Fund supports projects that enhance the arts and humanities programs for students and teachers in the Germantown Central School District. 

Karen A. Krager (Germantown, NY), to support a poetry and prose writing program
Emi Olsson (Germantown, NY), to support Odyssey of the Mind, an international competition that teachers students to develop creative problem-solving skills
Karyn Schassler (Germantown, NY), to support an after-school film making program for sixth-grade students

JAMES C. KAPTEYN PRIZE ($12,000)

The James C. Kapteyn Prize honors excellence in teaching with a $10,000 prize for study or travel, and a $2,000 to the chosen teacher's school.

JAMES AND ROBERT HARDMAN FUND ($41,856)

The James and Robert Hardman Fund supports nonprofit groups, community organizations or public agencies that support the residents of North Adams and the neighboring communities of Florida and Clarksburg, Mass., and Stamford, Vermont. The fund prioritizes projects that support disadvantaged residents or enrich the cultural and natural environment. 

Berkshire Children and Families (Pittsfield, Mass.), for its Kids 4 Harmony classical music program 
Berkshire County Head Start (Pittsfield, Mass.), to upgrade the playground equipment at the Johnson School
Berkshire County Regional Employment Board (Pittsfield, Mass.), to provide training and summer work experience to young people in North Adams 
Berkshire Food Project (North Adams, Mass.), to provide free hot meals during the week and emergency food assistance on weekends
Berkshire Nursing Families (Adams, Mass.), to offer professional breastfeeding support services in North and Central Berkshire County at no cost
City of North Adams (North Adams, Mass.), to provide SNAP benefits at the North Adams Farmers Market
Community Access to the Arts (Great Barrington, Mass.), to provide arts workshops for people with disabilities at the Brien Center and at BFAIR in North Adams
Community Health Programs (Great Barrington, Mass.), to upgrade the EKG machine at CHP's North Adams medical practice
DCF Kids Fund (Pittsfield, Mass.), to provide access to enrichment activities and programs for foster children and youth
Elder Services of Berkshire County (Pittsfield, Mass.), to offer home-delivered meals to home-bound elders and congregate meals for seniors capable of attending
Elizabeth Freeman Center (Pittsfield, Mass.), to provide life-saving services for safety and recovery for victims of domestic and sexual violence and their families
Hoosac Harvest (North Adams, Mass.), for its Subsidized Shares program that connects lower-income community members with farms, farmers and locally grown food
North Berkshire Habitat for Humanity (North Adams, Mass.), to renovate an abandoned home in North Adams for a family of four
North Berkshire Interfaith Action Initiative (North Adams, Mass.), to purchase food for its food pantry

LENOX EDUCATION ENRICHMENT FUND ($6,913)

The Lenox Education Enrichment Fund supports projects that enhance the educational experience of students and teachers in the Lenox public schools. 

Brian Cogswell (Lenox, Mass.), for an anti-bullying presentation for all students at Lenox Memorial Middle and High School
Amanda Hanlin-Hochler (Lenox, Mass.), to support Books for Beginners, a project that provides books for kindergarden students to take home
Bettina Montano (Housatonic, Mass.), for a two-week dance program at Morris Elementary School and Lenox Memorial Middle and High School, put on by Berkshire Pulse
Dennis Regan (South Lee, Mass.), for Housatonic Valley Association's programs on watershed education
Karen Romeo-Leger (Lenox, Mass.), for students at Lenox Memorial Middle and High School to build scarecrow sculptures
Brad Schiesser (Pittsfield, Mass.), to cover the cost of tickets for students to see Barrington Stage Company's "Camping with Henry and Tom" performance
Gayle Tardif-Raser (Lenox, Mass.), to support Mass Audubon's watershed education program at Morris Elementary School

NEW LEBANON ARTS & HUMANITIES FUND ($2,317)

The New Lebanon Arts & Humanities Fund supports projects that enhance the arts and humanities experience of students and teachers in the New Lebanon School District.

Kate Genzale (New Lebanon, NY), to support Be the Book, a program that uses reader kits to enhance the English language curriculum and engages students in acting out various scenes from picture books
Dotan Schips (New Lebanon, NY), to support the student-led literary magazine at New Lebanon Jr./Sr. High School

NEW WORLD FUND ($10,000)

The New World Fund supports nonprofit organizations that provide services to recent immigrants to Berkshire County.

Berkshire Immigrant Center (Pittsfield, Mass.), to hire a full-time bilingual case manager and to assist in the training programs required to enable her to become a Board of Immigration Appeals accredited representative
Volunteers in Medicine (Great Barrington, Mass.), to support the cost of providing care to immigrant patients

NORTHEAST DUTCHESS FUND ($87,375)

The Northeast Dutchess Fund supports nonprofits, municipalities, community organizations or civic entities in northeast Dutchess County, NY.

Bard College Center for Civic Engagement (Annandale-on-Hudson, NY), to enhance the Citizen Science program, which allows elementary and middle school students to work on science projects with Bard College students
Center of Compassion (Dover Plains, NY), to provide food for over 80 children who do not have access to weekend meals
Clinton Community Library (Rhinebeck, NY), for its senior education programs
Dutchess Community College (Poughkeepsie, NY), to continue its high school equivalence and ESL programs, and to provide transportation and child care for students in need
First Presbyterian Church of Millerton (Millerton, NY), to provide healthy meals to people in need in the community
Food of Life Food Pantry (Amenia, NY), to provide fresh, nutritious food to people in need as well as referrals to agencies that address poverty
Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival (Cold Spring, NY), for five-day Shakespeare residencies at Millbrook Middle and High Schools
Millbrook Early Childhood Education Center (Millbrook, NY), to provide a best practice preschool education for children in Millbrook and the surrounding areas
Millbrook Rotary Foundation (Millbrook, NY), for its New Year's Eve event, featuring live entertainment and activities
Millerton Adopt-A-Family (Millerton, NY), for its annual Christmas program to provide winter clothing and donated toys to families in need
North East Community Center (Millerton, NY), for its childhood enrichment programs
NorthEast-Millerton Library (Millerton, NY), for its 2016 "Music in the Annex" concert series
Rebuilding Together Dutchess County (Poughkeepsie, NY), to renovate homes of low-income homeowners in northeast Dutchess County
Stanford Free Library (Stanfordville, NY), to purchase a new color printer
The Susie Reizod Foundation (New Paltz, NY), to provide 150 pairs of new shoes to economically disadvantaged children
Town of Amenia (Amenia, NY), for its dance program
Wassaic Community Farm (Webutuck, NY), to set up a low-income accessible farm stand to address food desert issues affecting the community
Wassaic Project (Wassaic, NY), to support three professional sound technicians and a professional lighting designer for the 2016 Summer Festival

PITTSFIELD EDUCATION ENRICHMENT FUND ($7,000)

Supports programs that emphasize excellence, innovation and creativity for students and teachers of the Pittsfield School District. 

Berkshire County Head Start (Pittsfield, Mass.) for a summer Lunch and Learn program for students in the Pittsfield School District

SEVEN TOWNS' EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP FUND (step) ($8,253)

STEP supports projects that inspire and engage students and teachers in the Central Berkshire Regional School District.

Peter Andersen (Dalton, Mass.), to support a freshman transition program at Wahconah Regional High School
Mary Jo Erickson Connor (Dalton, Mass.), to support Body/Mind/Spirit, a program to help students balance physical and mental health with yoga and nutrition education; to support Safe and Respectful Schools, a project to improve the school climate and learning environment
Bettina Montano (Housatonic, Mass.), to support Berkshire Pulse's three-week dance program at Nessacus Regional Middle School
Brad Schiesser (Pittsfield, Mass.), to cover the cost of tickets for students to see Barrington Stage Company's "Camping with Henry and Tom" performance

The Simple Gifts Fund awards grants to young people ages 13-21 for participation in cultural or creative summer programs.

Pine Plains Central School District (Pine Plains, NY), for students to be able to dissect Dogfish sharks in anatomy courses; to purchase equipment for the high school's technology department; to purchase robots to help students learn about computing and programming; to support a visiting artist's lecture series

WILLIAMSTOWN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ENDOWMENT FUND/AUCTION FUND (WESE) ($27,100)

WESE supports initiatives and activities that inspire and engage the students and teachers of Williamstown Elementary School. 

Michelle Apland (New Lebanon, NY), to support Flying Deer Nature Center's survival skills program for fifth-grade students
Lucie Castaldo (Stockbridge, Mass.), to support IS183 Arts School of the Berskhires' Learning through the Arts program
Lauren Gotleib (Williamstown, Mass.), to support Words are Wonderful, a program that brings authors, storytellers, poets, illustrators and songwriters to Williamstown Elementary School
