Scholarship Guidelines

WHO CAN APPLY

Taconic Hills students whose family members are serving or have served honorably in the U.S. armed forces.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

The goal of the Closson-Raught American Legion Post 1160 Scholarship Fund is to support:

  1. Taconic Hills Central School District (THCSD) students whose grandparents, parents or siblings are serving or have served honorably in the armed forces in their pursuit of higher education (college/university, vocational school or accredited professional training institute) anywhere in the United States.
  2. Residents of the Taconic Hills Central School District who are veterans honorably discharged from the armed forces in their pursuit of higher education (college/university, vocational school or accredited professional training institute) anywhere in the United States.
  3. Residents of the Taconic Hills Central School District who are veterans honorably discharged from the armed forces in economic distress to receive emergency assistance.

ELIGIBILITY

High School Seniors

Applicants must:

  • Be a graduating Taconic Hills High School senior
  • Have been enrolled at Taconic Hills High School for at least their Junior and Senior years of high school
  • Have a grandparent, parent or sibling in the United States Armed Forces
  • Be accepted at a college or professional program

Veterans

Applicants must:

  • Be a resident of the Taconic Hills Central School District
  • Have DD214 Discharge Documentation
  • Be accepted at a college or professional program

AWARDS

The Closson-Raught Scholar receives $1,000 a year for up to four years (total $4,000) provided he or she continues to meet the academic and financial requirements established for the award. Scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the selection Committee. In a year where there are no eligible applicants or the Committee makes no recommendations, no award will be made.

REVIEW CRITERIA

The committee will review applications and materials submitted and make their decisions according to the following criteria:

The Student’s:

  • Financial need of the student and his/her family
  • Perseverance and fortitude in dealing with issues in his/her life while making a contribution to the community
  • Significance of the Scholarship Award to the Student
  • Demonstration of an ability to excel in a particular area of interest whether it is academic, the arts, athletic or vocational

Applications will be reviewed by the Closson-Raught Scholarship Fund Committee. This is a committee of area residents who are active in community affairs. Their recommendations will be reviewed by Berkshire Taconic’s Board of Directors.
