Northeast Dutchess Fund

Surrounded by the natural beauty of Dutchess County, it’s easy to forget that the needs of our communities are pressing. In parts of our region, more than 10% of residents live in extreme poverty. Volunteer emergency services need better equipment. Public schools lack funding for the arts and other enrichment programs.

Berkshire Taconic formed the Northeast Dutchess (NED) Fund in 2002 to address these issues and improve the quality of life in these rural communities.

Ned Corps: Mobile Social Services Addressing Rural Poverty

In 2007, NED created NED Corps, with the support of Russell L. and Judith M. Carson, of New York City and Millbrook. The program provides two bilingual client advocates who travel to meet with clients. The client advocates connect clients with social services that provide health insurance for children, translation assistance, emergency relief, free prescription drugs, food, shelter, mental health programs and other services.

In rural Dutchess County, limited public transportation is a daunting problem for the many people who don’t own cars. NED Corps not only brings services to clients’ towns, but allows client advocates to drive people to doctor’s appointments and meetings at the social security office. NED Corps gives community members access to resources and services that they didn’t know about and wouldn’t receive otherwise.

“As long time home owners in Millbrook we are acutely aware of the severe social and economic problems caused by the recent recession. We are delighted that we were able to work with Berkshire Taconic and its Northeast Dutchess Fund to create and fund a program that provides access to services for families in need of support.  The social workers our program employs are able to connect the working poor, immigrants and the elderly with available social services in the community.  This would not have been possible without the help of our friends at Berkshire Taconic.”

What Does the Fund Support?

Every year, in addition to NED Corps, the fund makes grants to libraries, community centers, school districts, women’s shelters, child care programs and more across the region.
