In the fall of 2016, Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation launched a process to learn more about the pressing issues facing our region. As a foundation with a 30-year history of helping to build stronger communities, we are privileged to partner with donors, nonprofits and community leaders as they work to enrich lives and meet urgent needs every day.

Looking toward our future, we wanted to gather a set of data and have a series of deliberate discussions to hear directly from a diverse range of residents. We wanted to know from their perspectives what is most important for improving lives, what challenges they face and what is keeping them in — or causing them to consider leaving — this extraordinary region. Working with a research partner, we held a dozen focus groups, launched four online surveys and reviewed existing data and reports. "A Closer Look" results from that process.

We recently hosted a webinar to discuss the results of "A Closer Look." A recording of the webinar is available to watch at your convenience, and we invite you to share it with your family, friends and colleagues to further discuss the pressing issues facing our four-county region.

During the webinar, BTCF President Peter Taylor and Mt. Auburn Associates President Beth Siegel, who guided the research, walked through highlights of the report. They expanded on the report's contents and shared their insights on the process and results of this yearlong project. Former BTCF Board Chair Chris Kennan moderated the event, and he fielded questions from attendees to our two panelists.

Over the course of this project, many locally grown strategies that aim to have a positive impact on the trends described in this report were shared by participants or evident from research. This list of initiatives with momentum is not exhaustive, but provides a window on good work that is happening across the region.
